In modern times, music is provided to children affected by a range of conditions such as autism or chronic neurological disorders - but do we have the evidence of benefit which stands scrutiny? Live Music Now has for years been promoting and organising professional musicians in special schools, hospitals, hospices and residential homes for the disadvantaged in society, principally for the young with disabilities and for the elderly, has won awards for its activities and is actively involved with projects to demonstrate the positive effects of such music interventions in improving health. Awe-inspiring performances to celebrate 10 years of changing young lives through music. Nucleo is a Sistema project based in North Kensington, giving children and young people the opportunity to learn an instrument as part of an orchestra, completely free of charge. Students attend 4-6 days a week, and through their participation they develop not only musically, but also in the many other social, personal and intellectual ways that musical study, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence can facilitate. To mark the Royal African Society’s 120th Anniversary, DSG Amina Mohammed will deliver the 2021 Annual Lecture on ‘Africa in a just transition – Investing in a sustainable recovery. Amina J. Mohammed was born in Nigeria, and has had a distinguished career as both a national and international public servant, including spells as a minister for the environment in Nigeria and in a range of roles at the United Nations.
